At home or out-and-about, our team brings an energy and enthusiasm to our clients that greatly enhances their social and emotional well-being.
Caring Companions for Active Adults
Social isolation is an unfortunate fact of life for many aging adults and their families. The inability to drive, be physically active or remember details may significantly limit a person’s ability to maintain friendships and interests or simply do errands and shopping. Our Friendly Visitor service provides both an important practical and social benefit to our clients and also brings peace of mind to their families.
Our Friendly Visitors are college educated social companions who share a genuine interest in helping our clients remain engaged, involved and enjoying daily life. Following a brief assessment of a client’s needs and interests, a Friendly Visitor is personally matched with a client to foster a strong relationship. After each visit, the Friendly Visitor prepares a brief summary of the outing which provides timely feedback for family and others involved in the individual’s care.
With flexible hours, including weekends, visits are customized for each client and could include the following activities:
Transportation to religious services and medical appointments.
Accompany to social and cultural outings.
Assist with errands and shopping.
Maintain personal calendar, schedule appointments, read and sort mail.
Work on hobbies and crafts together.
Plan fun outings for lunch, movies, museums and other interests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Before a Friendly Visitor is scheduled, the Director of the Friendly Visitor program meets with each new client to assess their background or interests. After this free interest assessment, a Friendly Visitor will be matched with the client. To get started, please call: 703-237-9048.
Typically, visits take place on a set schedule to ensure that the individual will have the same Friendly Visitor each time. This provides consistency and allows the Friendly Visitor and the individual to build a strong connection. However, we can also provide visits on an as needed basis. For example, some individuals may need transportation to an appointment every few months. We are happy to work with you as much as possible to meet your scheduling needs.
While visits can typically be scheduled on short notice, in order to match each client with a consistent Friendly Visitor, we suggest providing as much notice as possible.
There is no minimum or maximum amount of time for the visits. Visits can be as long or as short as needed. Most visits are between 2 to 4 hours.
Friendly Visitors provide a wide range of companionship services, including assistance with errands and shopping, transportation to appointments, social and cultural outings, and time together on hobbies and crafts.
